Residents recently came together to take part in a meaningful creative project to celebrate Learning Disability Awareness Week, embracing this year’s national theme, “Do You See Me?”
The theme encourages people to look beyond labels and recognise individuals for who they truly are, celebrating their unique personalities, talents, interests and experiences.
As part of the project, residents created colourful collages using old photographs, carefully selecting images that reflected how they would like the world to see them. Through their artwork, residents shared memories, achievements and aspects of their identity that are important to them.
Residents also took part in a reflective activity where they drew around their hands, decorated them and wrote personal thoughts about some of the challenges they experience in society. The activity provided an opportunity for residents to express their feelings, raise awareness and encourage conversations about inclusion, understanding and acceptance.
The finished displays are a powerful reminder of the importance of seeing the person behind the disability and recognising the valuable contributions that people with learning disabilities make to our communities every day.
A huge well done to everyone who took part in this thoughtful and creative project, helping to raise awareness and champion a more inclusive society.
